Children help reduce litter

26th October 2018

The 2018 UK Bin It! anti-littering educational show is on the road playing to audiences of 11-13 year olds in schools. The performances are audience interactive with students asked for their suggestions to reduce littering.

Sometimes the proposed solutions are somewhat unrealistic,
‘Design a machine like the street sweepers to pick up rubbish.’ Though, maybe, an enterprising group of students will create one in the future.

During the Summer Plymouth City Council and local councillors provided equipment and sacks for children, and their parents, to help clean up the City. The campaign, Clean our Patch, was set up by two parents, El Clarke and Ashton Samuels,
responding to the amount of litter on the streets.

Children of all ages took part, being rewarded with treats, including picnics and barbecues, as they filled nearly 700 bags with rubbish.

According to BBC News, the founders explained, ’We wanted to encourage community spirit and set an example to people around us so that we could create a cleaner, safer environment for ourselves and the next generation.’

There are anti-littering lesson plans on this website, for teaching 11-13 year olds. Help to Bin It! challenges students to create their own campaign to encourage people to bin litter.
